Strengthening health services in Nordhordland through simulation and partnership

Our stakeholders in the Norwegian delegation have had the opportunity to come together to work on developing sustainable services and see opportunities for further collaboration through a well-established partnership between hospitals, municipalities, and educational institutions. Through a well-established collaboration, the Norwegian hub will seek to use the network to establish a simulation arena in Nordhordland. Key experiences from the project will be incorporated into the planning.

Innovation in Practice

Municipal executive directors report to the municipal director/chief executive in the municipalities and have an overall responsibility to ensure that health and care services are prepared for future demands. This close connection to the services enables them to quickly identify where there is a need for more training, better collaboration, and more accessible learning arenas.

At the same time, EUVECA clearly highlights that sustainable solutions are created through collaboration across sectors – between municipalities, hospitals, and educational institutions. There has been strong interest in the region in using simulation as a method for training – both for employees in health and care services and as an attractive learning approach in upper secondary schools. Simulation provides the opportunity to practice realistic scenarios in a safe environment and can contribute to improved quality, confidence, and recruitment.

EUVECA has highlighted simulation solutions as a tool for making training more accessible locally. In addition to mobile simulation, we are also working to offer this at the Region Nordhordland Health Centre.

Key Takeaways

Simulation offers many possibilities. As the healthcare system evolves, municipalities will take on more responsibilities that are currently handled by hospitals. This will require the transfer of competence and targeted training for healthcare professionals. At the same time, we live in a world where preparedness and the ability to handle crises are increasingly important. Simulation provides a safe environment to train for such situations and is a valuable tool for building competence, collaboration, and readiness in health and care services.

Excerpt

By closely involving municipal executive directors and municipal chief medical officers in the work of developing a simulation arena in the district, this will be an important initiative to further strengthen collaboration in the region between Helse Bergen, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL), and Region Nordhordland.
To ensure strong anchoring, a separate concluding meeting was also held where all municipal executive directors and municipal chief medical officers were gathered. A thorough summary of the project was presented as part of its completion. The goal is to ensure solid anchoring for the work moving forward.

Challenge

The sustainability of the European health care sector has been challenged by 6 mega trends over the last several years. To respond to these trends and achieve maximum care quality, patient safety, efficiency, and economic sustainability, the sector has undergone major changes:

(i) Increased digitalization

(ii) A shift towards patient-centered care

(iii) Greater patient involvement in in co-designing care pathways
